PhD Student Douglas McKnight wins Rado L. Lenček Prize

Douglas McKnight, a second year PhD student in the German Department, recently won the “Rado L. Lenček Prize” for his paper titled “Between a Rock and a Hard Place: Cultural and Communicative Memory in Maja Haderlap’s Angel of Oblivion.” The prize, awarded annually by the Society for Slovene Studies for the best research submission in Slovene studies by a North American graduate student, is named after the society’s founding president and is intended to promote interest in Slovene studies amongst younger scholars outside of Slovenia. McKnight’s paper examines the deportations of Austria’s Slovene minority during the Second World War and how this particular history is remembered in Maja Haderlap’s 2011 novel. For more information about the Society for Slovene Studies, please visit their website.
