Despite not originally intending to major in German and picking it up as my second major in addition to history, throughout my four years at Georgetown the German department has provided me with some of my most valuable experiences and skills. I have become proficient in the language, learning both to read and write on a high level. The exposure to German literature, film, culture, and history in courses ranging from German poetry, to what it means to be Black and German, to the Netflix series Babylon Berlin and the TV series Tatort, a German police-procedural, have greatly broadened my horizons. Spending a summer in Trier with the German department’s longstanding study abroad program also counted among my most fulfilling experiences at Georgetown. The skills I obtained through my German major helped me to conduct original primary source research in German for my history major honors thesis on the emergence of German department stores.
