The German Department during the Great Women Writers event on March 27, 2025

Liebe Studenten, Kollegen und Ehemalige!

This is always the time and place to congratulate our majors, minors, and all graduating seniors for their accomplishments and wish them well for their future endeavors. In this rapidly evolving world, we will always be here to provide supportive council and be a resource to respond to the challenges that lie ahead. But remember: First, we should celebrate your achievements!

You will find news and updates here about the activities of the members of our community. We have engaged with research on youth films and issues of sexuality, and of intricacies related to newly translating a classic like All Quiet on the Western Front. We also have a large group of graduate students moving on to the dissertation-writing stage – always exciting and a time of deep reflection!

This is also a time of some transitions. Prof. Friederike Eigler’s term as George M. Roth Distinguished Professor will end and Prof. Marianna Ryshina-Pankova has been newly designated for that distinction. Congratulations! Also, I will complete my time as chair of the German Department, or, as it has become known, the GUGD. After a total of 17 non-consecutive years of chairing GUGD, it is high time for me to hand the administrative reins over to the next generation. I am convinced that Prof. Mary Helen Dupree will do a superb job of leading this wonderful GUGD into the future as we continue to contribute to the education and creation of knowledge that only the humanities can provide for in this world. This also means that Prof. Joe Cunningham will become the new Director of Graduate Studies – so he will not just be the person spearheading the Trier Summer Program, but also guiding our graduate students!

I am grateful for your continuing support as I step back from this leadership position. I am excited for the new phase of GUGD and hope to see you when and if you are around. Please, let us know and visit.

Best Grüße vom Hilltop!
Ihr,
Peter C. Pfeiffer
German Department Professor and Chair
