Georgetown University German Department Statement on the Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence
The Georgetown University German Department (GUGD) supports the integration of technology that fosters language acquisition, promotes cultural understanding, and encourages discovery-based learning. Recognizing that generative artificial intelligence (A.I.) offers both opportunities and challenges for language education, the GUGD issues the following guidelines on the appropriate use of A.I. in language learning and coursework.
The GUGD curriculum is built upon a process-based, scaffolded approach to learning, where students progressively develop the skills to analyze, interpret, and produce language independently. Iterative revision, creative expression, and critical engagement with both language and culture are key components of this process. Our goal is to equip students with the linguistic and critical thinking skills necessary for meaningful communication and cultural engagement. We encourage students to interact thoughtfully with technology, recognizing both its potential to enhance and hinder the learning process.
While A.I. can offer supplementary benefits when used responsibly, it cannot replace the deep learning that comes from personal reflection, authentic production, and ongoing revision. As such, the use of A.I. to bypass or replace essential stages of learning fundamentally undermines the integrity of the educational experience.
Prohibited Uses
- Students are not permitted to use A.I. tools (e.g., text generators, translation programs) to complete coursework, including writing assignments, oral presentations, or other assessments, unless explicitly directed to do so by their instructor.
- Submitting A.I.-generated content as one’s own work is strictly prohibited and will be treated as an academic integrity violation.
Permitted Uses
- Instructors may authorize the use of A.I. for specific assignments, such as brainstorming, generating discussion prompts, or providing supplemental language practice. In such cases, students must explicitly acknowledge their use of A.I. technology in the assignment.
- When A.I. tools are utilized, students are required to submit a brief reflective statement outlining how A.I. contributed to their learning process, highlighting both its benefits and limitations.
As the capabilities of A.I. continue to evolve, this document is subject to revision to reflect new insights, ethical considerations, and pedagogical strategies. The GUGD remains committed to fostering an environment of academic integrity and meaningful learning, with the goal of preparing students for an increasingly complex, technology-driven world.
