During the spring semester of 2024, Andre Albrecht (IBLC, COL ’27) was selected as one of 25 recipients of The Laidlaw Undergraduate Leadership and Research Scholarship. He selected Prof. Verena Kick as the mentor for his research project titled “Redefining Arthouse Cinema in the Era of Digital Dominance, Cinema Chains, and Blockbuster Behemoths.” Andre conducted his research in the summer for about two months, when he visited various arthouse cinemas in Berlin, researched their strategies to compete with mainstream movie theater chains, and dove into research literature on the history of arthouse cinemas. Prof. Kick and Andre met regularly via Zoom to discuss his progress. On November 8, Andre was invited to share his research at the annual Laidlaw Scholars Conference at Columbia University. For the next step, Prof. Kick will support Andre as he hopes to publish his research.
