Abigail Obafemi

Born and raised in Northern Nigeria, Abigail earned her Bachelor’s degree in European Studies from the University of Ibadan in 2021. Her undergraduate thesis examined the final days of World War II in rural Austria, as depicted in Paulus Hochgatterer’s novel “Der Tag, an dem mein Großvater ein Held war.” That same year, she began her Master’s at the University of Alabama, where she focused on the history and genres of German literature, as well as on language pedagogy. During her time at the University of Alabama, Abigail was awarded a travel scholarship in June 2022 to Leipzig, Germany, to participate in the ‘Mit Deutsch in die Zukunft’ seminar for teachers of German. She also served as the Graduate Representative to the German Department’s faculty meetings, Recruitment Chair for the 2023 UA Languages Conference, and Organizing Secretary of the African Students Association. Following her MA, Abigail taught beginner and intermediate-level German courses at the University of North Texas for one academic year.

Now pursuing her doctoral studies at Georgetown University, Abigail’s research interests lie at the intersection of Second Language Acquisition and digital pedagogy. She is particularly interested in the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI), media, and technology in the FL classroom to promote learner autonomy and cultural awareness. Her research aims to explore how contemporary digital trends can be effectively incorporated into language instruction to enhance student engagement and transformative learning.
